Attitude is an inside job. When one considers an opportunity to serve in some type of leadership capacity, they have to ask themselves two important questions.
1) Can I? – This is a question of ability. A person must be able to affirm that they are capable of doing the things that this position asks of them to do.
2) Will I? – This is a question of attitude. Unfortunately, this one isn’t answered as often as the other one. There will be moments of difficulty, criticism, and a wide variety of barriers to overcome within a leadership role.
Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar says, “It is not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude.”
If you as a leader haven’t made the decision to have the right kind of attitude prior to the hard times, it will affect the way you handle yourself and the way you treat those around you.
How enjoyable is it to be around people with a negative attitude? It’s not. I am always wary of people who suffer from “stinkin’ thinkin’!” I tell them that they need to go and get a “check-up from the neck up!” Many times, people will tell me that this is the way that they’re wired; that they’re naturally pessimistic. But that’s a cop-out.
The one thing that is true about your attitude is this: It’s a choice – every time!
